[TW] Ding Tai Fung (鼎泰豐)

Since I’m currently in Taiwan, I’ll start off with Taiwanese food!

Ding Tai Fung is well-known for its little dragon buns (小籠包), which is awarded with Michelin one star. It is also ranked as the #1 from a American food website. Ding Tai Fung started in Taipei, and has a lot of branches around the world. It has recently opened a new branch in Kaohsiung!

The buns are their signature dish and I loved it. The wrapping is really thin that I have to be really cautious when picking it up with chopstick and a spoon on the side. It is really juicy inside that makes the wrapping really fragile. The soup squirts out after you took a bite. The rich broth is released from the pork meatballs.

Their appetizers are also the must-try. There are more than 10 choices, and these 3 are my favorites. The one on the left-back is pickled bean sprouts, which the bean sprouts are not soggy at all. The one on the right-back is a type of soy-bean product, which is called kao-fu (烤麩). It’s a vegetarian-friendly dish, which is a bit sweet. The one in the front is a type of seaweed. It is a common appetizer in most of the restaurants in Taiwan. It is a salad mixing with sesame oil and chili for flavoring.

ImageHot & Sour Soup (酸辣湯)

Personally, the soup is never on my top list, but my mom insisted On ordering it. However, the soup surprised me. It is flavorful, and I like it because it wasn’t too thick. A lot of restaurants add corn starch to gelatinize the soup, which I don’t like it. This one is just right on the spot.

This is my favorite out of all the dishes that I’ve tried in Ding Tai Fung (better than the buns). The shrimps are fresh, and the skin is not mushy at all. The spiciness is just right for me, except it was a bit too oily, but that’s what the dish about. It is flavored with chili oil.

Overall, it did not let me down, but it’s a bit expensive to visit often.

From a nutrition point of view, I would not recommend to eat these often as they are all high calories food, and not much fibre. However, in most cases, tasty foods aren’t healthy. 🙁
