[TW] Xing Long Ju (興隆居) – Traditional Taiwanese Breakfast

This restaurant is opened since 1954. It is one of the oldest, classic traditional breakfast spots in Kaohsiung. It all started with my grandpa, who has to have their breakfast every single morning. The queue is always long no matter it’s rainy or sunny day.

Soy Bean Milk

Soy bean milk – the soul of traditional breakfast. The soy bean milk in Asia tastes different than the ones in Western countries. I found the soy bean milk quite unique. It has a slightly burned flavor. The burned flavor contributed in a good way. The way of making the soy bean milk is to blend the soy beans first, then squeeze out the liquid through the filter, and then bring it to boil on the stove. I believe that the burned flavor is from the last step, which makes it original.

Pork Buns

The pork buns are one of their signature dishes! Each batch is gone within 1 minute whenever it’s out. I had the pork bun once, and it’s really juicy in there. A really thick and rich broth is extracted from the pork. The dough is fluffy and pillowy, while the filling is burning hot. The filling is a mix of ground pork and scallions.

THIS IS MY FAVORITE! (no doubt!) I always have this whenever I go visit, and I always get 10 pieces back to Montreal! Making the rolls are a bit complicated, since it’s a type of pastry (like croissants). The dough smells really good. It’s primary made with all-purpose flour and lard. Sometimes people eat it with fried bread stick, or eggs (just like a sandwich), but personally, I love plain clay over rolls.

They also offer a variety of food too, such as potstickers, steamed sandwich, egg cakes..etc.

It opens really early in the morning (around 4:00 am). It’s a really popular breakfast restaurant spot that people from different age group would love. Definitely a must-visit place!

  1. I got on a Chinese food kick back when I was a teenager and learned how to make those sesame rolls! I’ve never seen any from a restaurant, so it was really cool seeing your post! (I might have to go make myself some now…but, as you say, they’re so time-consuming…)
