After having lunch at Le Newtown, my friend Ashley and I continue on with our Taste MTL foodie trip for dinner at a small French bistro on the Saint-Denis Street around the Plateau Mont-Royal named Au Cinquième Péché. It was recommended by Ashley’s friend, and since we were both free, we thought that we’d give it a try.
Since there were only two options for appetizer, main, and dessert, Ashley and I ordered one each and shared. The texture of the foie gras mousse is really smooth and creamy. The cranberry sauce gives a bit of sweetness, and the hazelnuts add on the crunchiness. The flavor and the texture were well-balanced! However, the taste of the foie gras isn’t as strong as La Société‘s foie gras parfait.
This is my first time having marinated mackerel. The marinated mackerel itself is a bit salty, but the freshness of cucumber balanced it out. I really liked this!
I’m a seafood person, and I’m normally really picky with seafoods. This salmon is probably one of the best salmons I’ve ever had from a restaurant. It wasn’t overcooked. The exterior is crispy while the inside is moist and tender.
This dish is well-cooked too! Normally, most of the duck meat has this gamy taste, but this duck breast doesn’t have it at all! It wasn’t over-cooked, and the presentation makes it seems like you are eating steak. However, the “gnocchi-flette” was a bit weird in both texture and flavor.
This dessert was alright. It was basically brownie topped with pear and chicory.
Ashley and I both loved this one! Even though we were really full, we still found it delicious. The panna cotta has pretty strong black tea taste, which made it really refreshing after such a heavy meal. The biscotti was also really good! This dessert definitely out-shined Susie’s cake.
Overall, the foods were good, and the services were good as well! However, we were both still a bit full from the lunch, hence we couldn’t enjoy the foods as much as we do. We were glad that the waiters actually gave us a short break between the main and the dessert.
A side note: Apparently, Au Cinquième Péché is the only restaurant in Montreal that serves seal meat and duck heart tartare! (Both are their signature dishes) However, I’m not sure if I would dare to try it out….
