Les 400 Coups is located in the Old Montreal, offering the customers a contemporary and stimulating dining experience. The menu changes seasonally, and promotes local ingredients as much as possible. I’ve always want to book a table during MTL à Table, but it has already been fully booked. However, I found out later on that they offer lunch set menu (2 courses or 3 courses) every Thursday and Friday! You know how much I love fancy lunch.
The contemporary interior is dark but cozy, with a nice bar and high ceilings. Though the color theme is grey-ish, but it’s filled with sunlights during the day. My friend and I arrived quite early, however, the restaurant filled up quickly as soon as lunch time hits.
Since we are finally there, both of us opted for the 3-course lunch menu.
Mushroom soup, Parle-moi Z’en cheese cromesquis, butternuts, thyme: I started off the lunch with this hearty mushroom soup. The thickness of the soup was right on the spot. It wasn’t too thick that makes you feel like having blended mushrooms, or too thin that you feel like drinking mushroom flavored water. The cheese cromesquis added a bit of saltiness and crunchiness to the soup.
Smoked duck magret, blueberries, kohlrabi, mustard, wintergreen (+$8) – My friend chose this appetizer, and both of us were wowed by its presentation upon serving. I tried a piece of the duck. It was tendered, and quite special when pairing with blueberries.
Arctic char, naked oats, radish, pickles, Part des anges sauce – I opted this as my main. The plate is so clean and neat. I really liked the fish. The skin was crisp, and the flesh was tendered. The sauce was a bit sour, which I liked it. It made the dish light and refreshing.
Caramel and sunflower crémeux, yellow plum sorbet, sea buckthorn, thai basil – Of course the meal can’t end without dessert, especially that’s what Les 400 Coups is known for! The portion of the dessert is definitely bigger than what I was expecting. The sorbet was light and refreshing. It wasn’t overly sweetened (thought it would be cause of the caramel).
Manjari dark chocolate tart, peanuts, blueberry purée, babaco sorbet – I liked this more than the previous one. The chocolate was rich, and perfect pairing with the sorbet!
As Montreal Food Pictures said, “if you are going to Les 400 Coups, you have to make rooms for dessert!” I definitely had a good experience at Les 400 Coups for lunch, and will definitely come back for lunch when the menu changes! The creative menu, and stunning plating bring the dining experience to a different level for lunch. The menu changes periodically, so I can’t wait to see what the culinary team can offer!
