[MTL] Taste MTL 2013 – Le Newtown

Ambiance

Le Newtown is a bistro located on rue Crescent. Despite offering the Taste MTL menu at night, they are also offering the Taste MTL menu for lunch for this week only! Therefore, my friend Ashley and I decided to have lunch there on Friday!

The restaurant was empty when we arrived, but we were guessing it’s because it was already passed regular lunch time (we arrived a bit past 1:00 pm). The restaurant is bright and feels pretty nice, and we got seated next to the window, which was perfect for our photo-taking.

Maple pumpkin soup, bacon and cheddar grissinni

Both of us ordered this soup, and we loved it! It’s such a hearty soup for the cold weather in Montreal. The consistency of the soup is perfect! It’s not too runny, and not too thick as well. It wasn’t over-seasoned, and the pumpkin flavor is pretty strong. The tiny bacon pieces in the soup enhance the saltiness.

Free range chicken confit cassoulet

I ordered this main course since I have fallen in love with cassoulet after my first encounter with cassoulet at La Société. However, I guess I have set the standard too high. This was a bit disappointing. The chicken is a bit bland, and it wasn’t that juicy and tendered. The white beans are too dried. However, the sausages are pretty good.

Slow cooked maple glazed veal blade orzotto

Since I don’t eat beef, I had a bit of the orzotto. Orzotto is similar to risotto, except it is made with pearl parley instead of rice (which is a healthy alternative!). The texture of the orzotto is so good! It’s a bit chewy (like the sticky rice, but not as sticky), and it is seasoned with cheese and white wine. I would totally order this if it wasn’t served with veal.

Baba au rhum with maple chantilly cream

Baba au rhum is a small yeast cake saturated in hard liquor (usually rum). This dessert is alright. It wasn’t outstanding, but not bad too.

Frozen nougat with candied maple nuts

This dessert is pretty good! I thought it would be sticky since it’s nougat, but it tastes more like ice cream with frozen berries. The maple nuts adds the crunchy texture! It is well-balanced, and an outstanding dessert!

Another side note, the service of the restaurant is pretty good! The waiter always come by to make sure everything is alright, and the time between each dish is served wasn’t too long as well.
