[MTL] Non-Italian Brunch Gem in Little Italy – Salmigondis

I’ve heard about Salmigondis quite a few times before visiting. I didn’t have any motivations to go north until it was strongly recommended by Montreal Food Pictures, especially it’s from the same owner as Arts Cafe (one of my favorite cafes in Montreal). Locating in the Little Italy, Salmigondis is only a block away from Impasto and GEMA. I can say it makes the top 3 best brunches in Montreal on my list.

Another plus about Salmigondis is that they take reservations (not anymore)! Definitely gain some extra points when a restaurant takes reservation for brunch. The restaurant is a bit smaller than I expected, and there isn’t much space between tables. The ambiance is loud, and noisy once it’s full house. My friend and I had to scream, literally, at each other.

Despite that it was loud, we still enjoyed our food. My friend ordered the French toast, which came with earl grey caramel, a scoop of goat cheese, arugula, and lemon confit. We were both surprised how strong and flavorful the earl grey caramel was, and the earl grey and goat cheese definitely makes a good combo. The french toast was fluffy.

I settled for the confit guinea fowl, which was served on polenta cake, rye berries, poached egg with mustard hollandaise. I loved it! The pairing is quite unique, just like the eggs benedict at Arts cafe. The guinea fowl was amazing. It was so tender that it melted in your mouth, while the skin is crispy. The eggs were perfectly poached, firm egg white with runny yolk. I’m always a fan of polenta cakes from Arts cafe, and the ones at Salmigondis are just as good. The mustard hollandaise is lighter than classic hollandaise.

Aren’t the presentation of the plates gorgeous? Salmigondis not only satisfies your taste buds, but visuals too. The food is simple and comforting, yet with a touch of sophistication. The waiter was attentive too, even when the restaurant starts to get busy, our water is always refilled without asking or wondering where the waiter is. The menu changes periodically according to what’s in season. Even though the noise level was a bit too high, the experience was still impeccable. Definitely recommend Salmigondis for brunch!
