[MTL] Greek to its Finest – Milos

Milos, located in the heart of mile end (in between Ave. St-Viateur and Ave. Fairmount W. on Ave. du Parc), and it has been in Montreal’s culinary scene for more than 30 years. Moreover, it is the one and only restaurant that my mom asks to visit over and over again when she’s in Montreal. Don’t get scared by the $$$$ when you see it on restaurant review websites, because their lunch deal is definitely a steal!

With restaurants in Miami, Las Vegas, Athens, and New York, Milos falls in the fine dining category in Montreal’s Greek restaurants scene. However, if you’ve read my experience at Caprice in Hong Kong, you would know how much I love to take the advantage of high-end restaurants’ lunch menu. Hence, there’s no need to break the bank to have a taste of Milo’s fresh and simple Greek cuisine.

Their lunch menu is a 3-course menu, with appetizer, main course, and dessert. It is quite elaborate. There are 3-4 choices in each category, with a great focus on fish and seafood (exactly what I love), and the quality of the ingredients is on top notch. In corresponding with their simple, yet exquisite dishes, their ethos is simple, “the best produce, the best wines, the best honey, the best yogurt, and above all, the best fish and seafood”. And yes, I agree (not sure about the wine though).

Soon after the waiter placed our orders, he brought up a basket of warm and fluffy whole wheat bread. The bread is slightly toasted, therefore it is crisp outside, and soft inside, and paired with Milo’s very own extra virgin Greek olive oil. It’s one of the best bread basket I’ve had in Montreal.

The tuna tartare with sesame flat bread is always my go-to appetizer. The tuna is fresh and tender, and not mushy. No additionally seasoning is needed when the fish is fresh. The sesame flat bread is thin and crispy. The sesame flavor gives a nice fragrant in the mouth when pairing with the tartare.

I always have a hard time choosing between whether to get the tuna tartare or this hortopites as appetizer, therefore I always make my mom to get this so we can share. Though I’ve never been to Greece, but I’ve heard and read a lot about their food. I think this is one of the dishes that truly represents the Greek cuisine. The hortopites is a healthy mix of greens, dandelions, and feta wrap in Lambrini’s house-made phyllo dough. The filling is a bit sour and lemon-y, which I find it quite nice as an appetizer.

As for the main course, I always opt for the whole white fish of the day, simply the best. The grilled fish with olive oil and lemon is enough to bring out the sweetness of the fish, if it’s fresh. It’s simple, but the best. I like to have it with capers as well, the sourness gives a bit of freshness overall. It also comes with a side of blanch vegetables! The other main courses are good too, but, I just have to go with this.

As their ethos, “best yogurt”, the yogurt martini. Their house-made Greek yogurt is thick and creamy, topped with fruit jam, perfect ending to the meal. It freshens up your mouth after the meal, and ends on a healthy note.

This CAVA’s baklava ice cream surprised me when I tried it. I’m not an ice cream person, but this ice cream is light and not overly sweetened. I like the crunchy textures, and its nutty, cinnamon flavor. Strongly recommend this if you don’t like yogurt! As for their other dessert, almond pear pie, it was quite disappointing when I had it.

The ambiance is classy with a Mediterranean flair. Since Milos emphasizes on its fresh and top quality products, everything, from the seafood to the produces, and wine, is displayed in the dining room.  The service was impeccable, just like their food. The waiters definitely know the menu well, and are patient at explaining and answering any questions that we have. When I visited with my friends, we were obviously the youngest group in the entire restaurant (others were all business people in suits), but we didn’t feel uncomfortable or neglected by the waiter.

Though their price for lunch menu has gone up from $20 to $25, I think it’s still within an acceptable range for its quality and service.

Besides the regular dining services, Milos also offer private dining events service. Overall, Milos definitely lived up with their ethos.
