[MTL] Worth the Trip – Hoogan et Beaufort

Hoogan & Beaufort is definitely the new talk of the city. It’s a new restaurant from chef Marc-André Jetté, who was the former chef at Les 400 Coups. Locating in the Rosemont, it is not an usual place where people hang out or chill, but it is worth the trip.

Hoogan et Beaufort

The restaurant is spacious and bright with large windows. Also, the fire pit at the back reminded me of Restaurant Mercuri in Old Montreal. For dinner, there are two options: à la carte or tasting menu (5-course).

Since my friend and I weren’t that hungry, we opted for à la carte. Hoogan et Beaufort adapted the sharing concept, which has been quite a popular theme lately.

Hoogan et Beaufort

Appetizer: Black cod gravlax, sea asparagus, grilled almond, watercress, white turnip – We ordered two appetizers to share. This was a light start. The fish was fresh and tender, while the almonds and sea asparagus added some crunch to the entire dish.

Hoogan et Beaufort

Appetizer: Grilled octopus, fingerling potato, olive, burnt pepper yogurt – This is probably the only grilled octopus that I had in Montreal which wasn’t mushy. It was tender, but not too chewy.

Hoogan et Beaufort pasta

Pasta: Strozzapreti, sea urchin butter, smoked mussels, lemon, sorrel – I’ve been told that the pasta is a must. When my friend and I were looking through the menu, this one definitely stood out because of the “sea urchin butter”. If you are not familiar with sea urchin, it’s also known as “uni” in the Japanese cuisine. It’s the butter of the sea, which has a smooth and creamy texture. I LOVED this dish! The pasta was fresh and al dente. The lemon definitely made the dish lighter!

Hoogan et Beaufort main

Main: Gaspor farm suckling pig, salsifi, apple, oat – Another dish that wowed us. The pork was so tender and juicy! It wasn’t fibrous at all. Strongly recommend it! You’ll have to taste it yourself to get it.

As I’ve said earlier, both of us weren’t that hungry, but the dishes had been quite impressive hence we ordered two desserts! (Yes.. not just one..)

Hoogan et Beaufort entrée

Dessert: Sura chocolate, cocoa nibs, pu-erh tea, charred vanilla ice cream – The chocolate was smooth and creamy, yet not too heavy. I’m not really a vanilla ice cream fan, however, the charred vanilla ice cream wasn’t overly sweeten. I like the subtleness of the vanilla scent. However, I was quite disappointed with not able to taste the pu-erh tea, which is one of my favorite teas that I drink every day.

Hoogan et Beaufort dessert

Dessert: Cardamom cake, sea buckthorn ice cream, fresh cheese chantilly – Loved this dessert! The cardamom cake is moist, chewy, and dense. The sourness of the sea buckthorn cleansed the palates after the meal.

Overall, it’s a lovely spot that I would definitely go back. The ambiance is laid back, and the waitress was friendly. Though the location is not that accessible, but since the spring/summer is coming, why not?
