[MTL] Live Fire + Good Ingredients – Foxy

Foxy, the new sister restaurant of Olive et Gourmando, is located in the newly-restaurant-blooming neighborhood, the Griffintown. Unlike O+G that serves hearty soups and sandwiches, Foxy focuses on slow-roasted grills, which there’s a fire oven installed in the restaurant. Since there was already a huge hype about it, and went with high expectations, came out without disappointment.

My friend and I made the reservation approximately 2 weeks ahead. The restaurant is divided into the bar section, and the tables. The restaurant is quite intimate, as there aren’t that many tables, and the distance between each table is quite narrow. With the gold and metal color tone, it sends off a rustic, casual vibe, yet classy.

The menu is divided into three categories: first bites, flatbread, and wood & charcoal. All the dishes are shareable, and the waitress recommended that around 4-5 dishes for 2 people.

We started off with the spring coleslaw, which is a mix of pulled pork, beemster cheese, radish, cucumber, and asian pear. I absolutely loved this! The vegetables were crisp and fresh, and the pulled pork was moist like chicken thigh! When I saw “coleslaw”, I was expecting just shredded cabbages, but there are variety of mixed vegetables in one plate. the seasoning was on the spot as well, which the vegetables were evenly coated, and no excess dressing at the bottom.

The other first bites that we got was the wood oven baked clams, which was served with tomato sauce, naked oat, and coriander. There were around 10 clams in there, which the shells were filled with the tomato sauce. The oats were so chewy, and the toasted almonds added the crunchy texture. My friend and I both found this dish has a Southeast-Asian influence as the spices and the taste of coconut milk.

There were only two choices under the flatbread category, hence we chose the garlicky fiddleheads, which is an ingredient that’s in season at the moment. It’s topped with chèvre, bacon, and arugula. The flatbread is made with Anson Mills flour, and baked in the wood oven. The dough is quite nice, but it didn’t stand out. Wish there could’ve been more fiddleheads as that’s supposed to be the main ingredients of the dish. I’m not a bacon person, but I found the bacon actually saved the dish. Since the fiddleheads, arugula, and even the cheese had a neutral taste, bacon added the saltiness and a bit of the kick to the entire dish.

The famous wood oven roast chicken from their wood & charcoal. The chicken is sourced from the Rose des Vents farm, which is a local Quebec farm. On the side, it’s served with the concentrated chicken juice that they have collected while roasting. It looks like like there’s only chicken legs, but it’s almost the entire chicken without the chicken breast. The chicken wing is still attached. The chicken was so tender and moist! The skin was slightly crispy, but not completely dried out. The sour cream was quite runnier due to the juice from the chicken. The concentrated chicken juice on the side was quite interesting. It reminds me of a Chinese medicines that my mother used to make me drink it. It’s full of complex flavors: woody, sweet, bitter… You’ll have to try it out yourself!

As they don’t have a dessert menu printed, the waitress described it to us verbally. Since there was only two desserts, we got both.

First, the apricot tart with a scoop of buttermilk ice cream. The crust was very good, and the filling was moist and not overly sweetened. Pairing with buttermilk ice cream, it was very good as it toned down the acidity from the apricots.

The other dessert was the lemon financier served with lemon ice cream. I loved the financier. I felt like it’s has a bit of whole wheat flour, because it was quite grainy, but moist. The lemon ice cream was refreshing! I’m never a lemony dessert person, but the lemon taste was mild. Loved the candied lemon slice. It was crunchy but not sticky.

Overall, the food was amazing. As indicated on their site, Foxy is all about live fire and good ingredients. The ingredients are fresh and locally sourced. The waitress was friendly and attentive too. Our water was consistently refilled without having to flag down the staffs. However, my friend and I both found the desserts overpriced. Even though it was good, but we thought that it didn’t worth paying $10+. Nonetheless, I would still definitely go back for their savories, especially the coleslaw!
