[MTL] An Enchanting Persian Café – Byblos Le Petit Café

Brunch doesn’t always have to be just about omelettes or pancakes. Byblos Le Petit Café, situated a bit east of Station Laurier, is a cozy, neighborhood cafe that is known for the Persian breakfast/brunch. I had such a carb-loaded, and soothing morning there with a friend on a Saturday morning.

I’ve heard a lot about this cafe before the visit. However, since the location is quite out of the way for me, I didn’t really have a chance during the school time. Nonetheless, I went on a Saturday morning to meet up with a friend. The restaurant is such a gem. Upon arrival, there were already quite a few tables of families, and couples enjoying the meal and chatting away to start off the weekend.

The menu is quite extensive, but as I’ve noticed, everyone pretty much ordered the same thing – the breakfast omelettes. The brunch comes with a choice of tea, coffee or juice. I opted for the Iranian black tea. It’s a bit stronger than I expected, but I liked it! No sugar is needed too for clearing the palate.

The famous feta omelette, which I guarantee you that it’s on every table. It was so creamy and fluffy, which was more like scrambled eggs than “omelette” to me.

The other item that I’ve seen quite often on the social media is the feta, halva, sweat bread, fine herbs, and nuts. It might look simple, but the nuts and herbs actually lighten up the richness from the omelette.

The breakfast also comes with an assorted bread basket, which contains pita and Iranian sweet bread. The pita bread is thin and not dried, while the Iranian sweet bread is kind of like a hybrid of brioche and croissant. It was soft, and airy, but flaky at the same time.

Moreover, the breakfast comes with two jams. The waitress told us a long list of jams that was available. However, it was too long to remember by the end of her list, but “pistachio” caught my attention. Therefore, we had the pistachio butter and rose jam. Though the pistachio butter was absolutely delicious, it was quite hard, and not really spreadable. It was more like nougat. On the other side, the rose jam was very watery and runny, but super duper sweet. It was perfect to pair with the sweet bread as the bread can easily soak the jam.

We also ordered the assorted yogurt dips, which consisted of eggplants, spinach, and beets. They were all good, but I wouldn’t say it’s a must. It was just because sometimes that I felt like having “yogurts” on the table is “healthier”.

Overall, it was a relaxed morning. Unlike some brunch spots in Montreal that I would feel like rushed due to the queue at the door, it didn’t happened. I would definitely go back to try other omelettes, such as dates or tomatoes. In the end, Sometimes, we just need to go back to the simplest.
