[MTL] A Boutique Café – Le Butterblume

Le Butterblume, locating on the main, is a restaurant, a cafe, as well as a boutique. This hybrid cafe is started by a team of the Pâtisserie Rhubarbe and Olive et Gourmando alum, which is at the border of Mile End and Little Italy. Not only the owners, Julie Romano and Nadine Boudreau, have strong restaurant résumés, so does the chef, Jens Ruoff. After my first visit, it has become one of my favorite weekday and weekend brunch spots!

Despite it’s located in a so-called “no man’s land”, le Butterblume is spacious and luminous. It’s quite a multi-purpose space, as the front is the cashier/take-out counter, open-spaced kitchen in the center with some bar seats and tables at the back.

Where’s the boutique? It’s on the right when you walk in the cafe! There are various fresh local flowers, potteries, magazines…etc. Customers can browse through it while waiting to be seated or pick some flowers on the way home.

My friend and I got there just a bit before 12 pm on Saturday, and we were lucky to get the last spot at the back! Sitting at the edge of a communal table, right next to the big window, getting plenty of sunshines, and starting off with a cup of cappuccino. They serve Hale, from Toronto, which is not really a third wave coffee. Also, since it’s a blend, it’s a bit too nutty for me (I prefer more acidic) to have it with the meal.

My friend and I ordered quite a lot of food, because everything seems so good on the menu, and we were indecisive. Since everything was served all at once, I’m introducing in no particular order.

It was very hot on the day of visit, so we started off with the gazpacho, which was a cucumber cold soup with gravlax, and served with homemade sourdough on the side. It was also drizzled with herb oil. It was light and refreshing, which is different than I expected. I thought it would be more like a “potage”. Nonetheless, I liked that it was cleared soup!

Next, the chicken liver mousse toast, topped with peas, strawberries, and micro greens. If you like exotic food, this is the one. Otherwise, I’ve seen a lot of avocado toast, which is topped with marinated mushrooms and jerk duck. The chicken liver mousse was rich and creamy. One bite per dollop, perfect! As the strawberries were in season, the acidity and sweetness balanced out the heaviness of the chicken liver.

This was the brunch special of the day, which is only served on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. It’s a pretzel bun layered with Austrian meatloaf, fried egg, cucumber, tomato, and lettuce. It was absolutely delicious! Such a comfort/hangover food. The meatloaf reminded me a bit of SPAM, but much better. The pretzel bun was chewy, and crisp exterior.

Moving on to the sweets. The scone with homemade jam, which was the strawberries. Personally, it wasn’t my type of scone. The texture was more bread/cake-like, not that crumbly, which means less butter (good!). I liked how the jam wasn’t overly sweetened, and there was still big strawberry chunks remained.

This is a must at Le Butterblume! The cauliflower cake, served with a Thai sweet-sour sauce.

It was like Chinese radish cake, but not quite. It was moist, and the crust was cheesy. There were still some cauliflower stems and chunks.

Overall, I loved the food! It’s not only visually pleasing, but appetizing too. After the initial visit, I’ve already gone back quite a few times, and always see new items on the menu! The cafe was bustling and busy during the weekend. Le Butterblume definitely elevated the cafe foods to another level.
