[MTL] Mexican Weekend – Taqueria Arturo

Mexican cuisine is not new in Montreal, but they are either in St-Henri, downtown or even further up in the plateau and mile end. Prince Arthur street is what I considered the grey area of plateau and downtown. The pedestrian street had been quite dead thanks to the constructions. Taqueria Arturo is brave to break to silence of the street and bring some Mexican food to the neighborhood!

The restaurant is located very close to the intersection of prince arthur street and boulevard st-laurent. The decor is quite simple. With dark wood tables, chairs, and flooring, a red wall filled with some small poster-liked pictures popping out at the right of the entrance. Apparently, those are the covers of the most popular comics in Mexico!

My friend started off with the hibiscus mimosa, which she thought it was pretty good! Hibiscus juice tastes a bit like raspberry, which is a bit sour. I found it as a nice substitution for the orange juice in classic mimosa!

I had the grapefruit juice, which I really liked it! I was expecting it to be really sweet and probably taste like boxed juices, but it wasn’t! It was like freshly squeezed grapefruit juice, sweet yet with subtle bitterness. I could tasted a bit of the pulps too!

I had the huevos divorciados, which was two eggs sitting on the corn tortillas, one topped with salsa roja (the red sauce) and the other with salsa verde (the green sauce), finished with few slices of avocado. On the side, there are black bean purée and sour cream. I’ve also added “pork belly” on the side. Why with quotation mark? Because it was more like crispy bacon, so I was a bit confused and had to double check with the staff. Besides too much sauce, I liked this dish! The egg was crispy on the eggs, but the yolk was still runny! Corn tortillas were soft, and definitely not as filling as toasts, so perfect for people who don’t want to be stuffed yet still want some comfort food. A wedge of lime definitely helped with lighten up the dish.

My friend had the tostada française, which brioche with Mexican vanilla and cinnamon infusion, topped with blueberry butter. On the side, there are fresh fruits and no.2 maple syrup. It also came with home fries, which are potato cubes. It was like french toast. From appearance, it looked ike it was deep-fried, but it tasted surprisingly light! Crisp exterior, and soft, pillowy inside. It wasn’t greasy at all. I loved how they served the maple syrup on the side instead of drizzled it over the top. It was a very clean and neat dish!

Overall, the brunch was pretty good (reasonable pricing too)! The chef has previously worked at Cartel, one of the best tacos in town, so definitely not a first-timer. There are actually other interesting items on the menu, such as the benedicts are served with chipotle hollandaise. Next time, I would like to go back to try their tacos!
